Caffeine-Fueled Mayhem
If primetime TV is to be believed, I have lucked into having the best mother-in-law in recorded history. I look forward to her coming when she visits and never cringe in Al Bundy-esque fear at the notion. That being said, she does have a hard time buying gifts for me. Knowing that I am a reader, the last 13 years she has bought me books. Good first guess. Unfortunately the books she often buys are a bit outside of the genres I would normally enjoy. I didn’t have the heart to tell her I never read one of the books she bought me nor the fortitude to correct her purchasing decisions. I’m sure you’ve been stuck in similar gift reception conundrums.
When she got her Kuerig coffee maker a year or so ago I dropped various, non-subtle hints that if she loved her son-in-law she would buy me one. After all, I drink coffee. In bulk. I went through the coffee snobbery phase where I would only drink fresh ground in my French press. I came however to the rational conclusion one day that was a lot of work for a couple of hits of caffeine in the morning; the stronger the better. If you’ve never seen a Kuerig coffee maker before, it is this delightful contraption that makes producing a fresh cup of coffee the easiest thing on the planet. You fill up the coffee water container, pop in a ready-made coffee portion in a plastic container (often referred to as a K-cup), press a button, and almost literally five seconds later you have caffeinated bliss.
So fast forward to this Christmas when my mother-in-law shows up with this curiously large, Kuerig-sized box. I could have hugged her there but had to wait until Christmas morning just to be sure. And as I heartily ripped open that present, what did my mother-in-law say with an impish grin?
“Better than a book isn’t it?”
Well … better than your book selections perhaps. Otherwise, one of the best Christmas presents ever.
If you love coffee and aren’t much of an elitist about your handmade endeavors, the Kuerig is for you. Get one.
Now.
