A Passion ReKindled

I have always been a passionate and dedicated reader.  As a child I loved being read to, as an adolescent I devoured books with vigor, and as a young adult my collection of worn paperbacks once threatened the sanctity of a relationship.  Somewhere along the line though my reading fell by the wayside; a byproduct of too much work, too much information and a loss of the simple joy of sitting quietly with a book and a cup of coffee and reading away the evening.  Lately though I’ve been trying to get back to enjoying some of the simpler pleasures in life.  Remembering the dog-eared book collections of my youth, I knew I wanted to start reading again but not do my part in deforesting the Earth.

Enter the Kindle 3.

As the tablet market resolved over the last couple of years I knew I wanted an eReader but I wasn’t really sure what I wanted.  As a MacHead I was extremely enamoured with the iPad but I knew I really didn’t have a use case for it.  I simply would not use an iPad enough in the run of a day to justify the $500 cost of baseline entry.  I have an old MacBook Pro I bought secondhand and I love it dearly so paying more than I did for my computer didn’t really make sense.  On the other hand, even though I could read books on my MacBook, it really wasn’t practical to take camping with us.  In the end the Kindle was at a nice nexus of price ($139 for the base WiFi-only), catalog of content, and portability.  I love my Kindle and I think I’ve read more in the last month since receiving it for Christmas than I have in the past 5 years.  So far I’ve read:

A nice mixture of mecha, self-improvement, and near term sci-fi.  Currently I’m working through The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss.

In the future I think I’m going to start posting reviews of the books I’ve read so watch this space if you’re looking for suggestions; especially if you’re into sci-fi, hard science, or self-improvement.  I really like most genres but that’s where I seem to be heading these days.  Until then, where did I put my Kindle …
